I’m living in Calgary, Alberta and so I was suprised to see this article in the Calgary Herald saying that Ireland’s New Blasphemy Law Labeled Return to Middle Ages. We must be free to criticize anything including religion, and the scary thing is that they talk about ‘intent’ which is subjective.

Sam Harris on Bill Maher’s Real Time

Sam Harris, author of The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation was on Bill Maher’s Real Time (HBO) this past friday. One of the key points in this interview for me was that Atheism is not a belief system, it is a rejection of religious and other dogma. I get accused of being as ‘religious’ as other believers, just about Atheism instead of organized religion. I usually explain instead that ‘I don’t know’ how we got here, but they think they do.

The other point is how destructive and insidious religion can be. I’d love to let everyone ‘live and let live’, however large organized religious groups are pushing their agendas, such as creationism in schools, rejection of using embyronic stem cells, spreading of sharia law, anti-gay support and so on. While many people are average church going folk, their support enables the large organized factions to mobilize.

Brad Pitt on Bill Maher’s Real Time

I was surprised to see Brad Pitt’s stance against religion. The main issue is how religion starts to affect policies. It would be great to let everyone ‘live and let live’. No matter what you think of him, it’s nice to see people start ‘coming out of the closet’ when it comes to freethinking, thanks to Bill’s movie Religulous. Here’s part 2 of the interview.

Lutherans to Allow Sexually Active Gays as Clergy

In a bold move, Lutherans are going to allow sexually active gays as clergy. Previously clergy could be gay but not engage in sexual activities (um, ok!).

Many religious people think you can only be moral if you are religious. The funny thing is that this religion-based morality is usually due to fear of being punished, rather than a natural desire to be a good person. To me, it’s a natural desire to co-exist with others and preserve the species.

New Study Links Religion to Immoral Behavior

Love this! Religious folks are usually on a high horse when it comes to morality. This study shows that religious countries are usually more immoral than moral.
